Because of everyone that donated their money, t-shirts, cookies, drinks and time (and braved the cool weather), the "Fighting Asparagus" were very well represented at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk around Heinz Field on October 1, 2003. The "Fighting Asparagus" were the largest non-corporate group in terms of sheer numbers (about 80 walkers!) and near the top in terms of donations (just over $10,000!). As a matter of fact, The "Fighting Asparagus" were recently confirmed as the largest individual team money-raisers! That means that we were the top team for raising donations in honor of a single individual!! Let's make sure we defend our title in 2004!
The masses of Asparagus supporters gathered in parking lot outside the Clark Bar & Grill to get ready for the big walk. People enoyed the treats, tried on their official t-shirts and shared their still-fresh memories of Jason.
Melissa was given the opportunity to be the first speaker of the night (after Mayor Tom Murphy, of course). She gave a short but moving speech about who the "Fighting Asparagus" are, a history of Jason's battle with AML Leukemia, and how much money we had raised after a relatively short campaign. She finished her comments by encouraging all in attencance to make every effort to raise more money next year. At the conclusion of her speech, the event coordinator gave the "Fighting Asparagus" the distinction of being the group that would lead the walk!
After two laps around Heinz Field, we returned to our parking lot, tried to finish of the cookies, watched the fireworks and raised a toast in memory of Jason.
Melissa would like to extend a very sincere "Thank You!" to everyone that participated in the event, either in person or in spirit. It was a wonderful night and we look forward to raising more money and having more walkers next year!
